Nadcap is an industry-managed approach to conformity assessment of 'special processes' that brings together technical experts from prime contractors, suppliers and representatives from government to work together and establish requirements for approval of suppliers using a standardised approach. Unlike traditional third party programs, approval is granted based upon industry consensus.
'Special Processes' are those processes where the parameters are directly influenced by component geometry and/or the results cannot be confirmed by inspection. They require specific to part work instructions to control the operation.
RPS900/1: Special Process Listing defines the Rolls-Royce special processes that are covered by the Nadcap scope of operation and for which a Nadcap accreditation must be achieved.
Rolls-Royce plc has decided that such an industry based consensus approval system is to be used as a primary means of evaluating and controlling 'special processes' conducted at suppliers.
The Nadcap programme is administered by the Performance Review Institute (PRI). PRI schedule an audit and hire an approved auditor who will conduct the audit against an industry agreed standard using an industry agreed checklist. At the end of the audit, any non-conformity issues will be raised and non-conformance reports issued. PRI will administer close out of the non-conformance reports and upon completion will present the completed audit pack to a 'special process' task group made up from members of industry who will review it and vote on its acceptability for approval.
Yes. Rolls-Royce has accountability for the quality of parts and so may still need to visit. Experience to date in the USA however, is that in general the frequency of visits significantly decreases from all primes participating in Nadcap. For special processes covered by Nadcap accreditation, visits by Rolls-Royce plc will only be by exception. Rolls-Royce will not duplicate the Nadcap audit.
Details can be obtained from the Nadcap website. Contact PRI at www.pri.sae.org.

Quality is fundamental to our product and an industry-managed programme is the cost effective way to manage 'special processes' in our supply chain. Suppliers in the USA already operating the programme have noted specific advantages: -
- Reduction in multiple audits by prime contractors.
- Consistent auditing creating a 'level playing field'.
- Recognition of the Nadcap accreditation used as an effective marketing tool.
PRI is now a global organisation with offices in Europe, Asia and USA.
The majority of aerospace Primes are now actively engaged in the Nadcap process, for a full listing please refer to the PRI website: www.pri.sae.org.
No, but Nadcap is an essential part of the overall supplier approval process used by Rolls-Royce plc.
This can vary for each special process. NDT, for example starts on a 12 monthly cycle and where a supplier demonstrates continued satisfactory compliance, the frequency is extended to 18 months then 24 months and is known as the Merit Program! All suppliers should aim to be on the Merit Program since it demonstrates excellence and obviously reduces the overall costs of holding Nadcap accreditation.
Industry agreed standards accepted by all participating prime contractors.
Your special process approval will be withdrawn and you will have to use an alternative Rolls-Royce plc approved source that has Nadcap accreditation.
A number of our Design/Make suppliers are taking steps to gain Nadcap accreditation particularly as the number of Aerospace Primes joining Nadcap is increasing. It is likely that Rolls-Royce will mandate this requirement in future.
Yes, since RRSPs are also classified as suppliers.
Yes where those suppliers are involved in performing special processes on material or components for Rolls-Royce.
Access the Nadcap website www.pri.sae.org, complete the preliminary questionnaires and submit this to PRI when the audit is being scheduled. PRI will confirm the exact scope of the audit and the applicable checklists.
Yes, where those suppliers are involved in performing special processes on material or components for Rolls-Royce.
Once you have obtained Rolls-Royce acceptance to become approved then you should seek Nadcap approval for the appropriate processes prior to the initial approval audits by Rolls-Royce.
Yes, Nadcap would be the minimum requirement prior to RR undertaking any new approval activity that may be a desk top review or on site review dependent on the complexity of the approval.
There is no exception for Nadcap approval due to low volume work. If you feel that the cost is too high then you have the option of sub- contracting the process to a Rolls-Royce and Nadcap approved source.
