Term Definition
Data Card The work instructions that identify the process sequence and parameters, also referred to as Specific to Part Work Instructions.
Defence Standard (DEF. STAN.) Quality System Requirements for Design / Development, Production, Installation and Servicing.
Definer (Component Definition) The person within Rolls-Royce responsible for the generation of the technical design solution to a specific problem.
Definitive Engineering Model (DEM) When issued, a DEM is a cold, manufacturable definition of a component or assembly, defined in accordance with manufacturing manufacturing capability – i.e. it is normally an engineering drawing; prior to final release, the DEM is the best representation of the manufacturable product at that time.
Definition Requirements Requirements of the definition (including parts lists), specifications, electronic models or purchasing document to which the article is to be made – including notes, specifications and lower level definitions thereby invoked.
Design Authority An organisation with formal authority for the design, validation and service support of a product. Under Aerospace regulations referred to as the "Type Certificate Holder"; this is usually Rolls-Royce, or a Rolls-Royce customer.
Design Authority (Rolls-Royce Marine - Submarines) Rolls-Royce is the Design Authority unless otherwise stated in the Order. (Rolls-Royce Marine - Submarines)
Design Characteristics Those dimensional, visual, functional, mechanical and material features or properties which describe and constitute the design of the article and can be measured, inspected, tested or verified to determine conformance to the design requirements.
Design Definition A complete and detailed description of a product including its cost, supply chain, geometric and functional characteristics, how to make, assemble / operate, maintain / support in service and product disposal.
Design Supplier A Design Supplier is a supplier doing design work for a Design Organisation Approval (DOA) holder based on a defined Technical Specification. A Design Supplier needs to be integrated into the Quality and Design Assurance System of the PART 21 Sub-part J approved Design Organisation (e.g. through a Design Supplier Integration Document).
Design Technical Data Data that documents the supplier's design of an item and provides substantiation that the design or design change satisfactorily meets all the requirements set forth by Rolls-Royce and other controlling agencies.
Designated Quality Representative (DQR) Certified Supplier representative that is selected to ensure all Rolls-Royce requirements are met on each part number prior to shipment
Detail Part Individual part defined by a manufacturing definition.
Deviation Advanced Engineering Memorandum This applies to Rolls-Royce Corporation only and is the authorisation, given in advance of manufacture, to accept variation to requirements, for a specific number of parts for a specific period of time.
Dimensional Inspection Inspection that involves the measurement of specified product dimensions, using either a general purpose gauge or a special to product gauge / tooling, or a combination of both.
Dimensional Proof Inspection An intermediate inspection of production component features against the manufacturing instructions, undertaken using manufacturing or inspection tooling that is independent of any special production tooling for that component. Where it is essential to use manufacturing tooling for location during inspection, it shall be over-checked by independent means or verified as within calibration prior to use.
Direct Part Marking (DPM) An international identification initiative being led by the Air Transport Association's Spec. 2000 directive (also referred to as Machine Readable Identification).
