Part 21
Annex to the Commission Regulation (EC) No. 1702 / 2003 of September 24th 2003 laying down implementing rules for the airworthiness and environmental certification of aircraft and related products, parts and appliances, as well as for the certification of design and product organisations.
Part 145 Annex II to the Commission Regulation (EC) No. 2042 / 2003 of November 20th 2003 on the continuing airworthiness of aircraft and aeronautical products, parts and appliances, and the approval of organisations and personnel involved in these tasks.
Partial First Article Inspection. (Partial FAI) A reduced FAI process applied to cover changes of source, processes, or selected / specific features of a part and making reference to a previously approved FAIR. This also applies to component families where the majority of features are identical.
Parts Per Million (PPM) The measure of defects in components delivered by suppliers / partners to Rolls-Royce.
Party Company One of the four companies that comprise the IAE collaboration (Rolls-Royce, Pratt & Whitney, MTU and JAEC).
Performance Review Institute (PRI) An independent trade association affiliated with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
Preferred Preferred signifies "required" unless there is a valid technical and / or legal reason why the stated requirement cannot be implemented – in all cases any proposed alternatives to the requirements shall be formally agreed with the Rolls-Royce Business Unit placing the purchase order(s).
Prevention of Pollution Use of processes, practices, techniques, materials, products, services or energy to avoid, reduce, or control (separately or in combination) the creation, emission or discharge of any type of pollutant or waste, in order to reduce adverse environmental impacts.
Preventive action Action taken as a result of analysis of information concerning a trend, in conforming products, services, process or quality system that identifies a potential for future non-conformance.
Primary Packaging Primary packaging is applied to individual products, which can be manually handled (exceptions small parts). The product itself shall remain contained within its primary packing from supplier despatch through to final end user and must be appropriate / robust enough to ensure protection from damage, deterioration, corrosion, tampering & other risks during storage and manual handling operations.
Probability The estimated likelihood of an incident occurring, determined by evaluation of the possible causes.
Problem Improvement Request (PIR) A document used to summarise the investigation and capture of key information in order to monitor the progress of 7step problem resolution (ref. Supplier Problem Resolution Process).
Problem Management The process of deciding which problem to work on and ensuring that such work is completed / closed-out; this is initiated by utilising a problem solving process but may require subsequent progression to process improvement.
Problem Resolution Process A process to investigate and resolve quality and delivery problems within a structured framework (previously referred to as the 3-in-1 process).
Problem Solving The technique for identifying the root cause of a problem together with an appropriate solution.
Procedure A specified way to carry out an activity or a process. Procedures can be documented or not. When a procedure is documented, the term "written procedure" or "documented procedure" is frequently used.
Process Set of interrelated or interacting activities, which transforms inputs into outputs.
Process Audit A process audit is a review of a specific process (e.g. purchasing) to verify process effectiveness and/or compliance to requirements. The process audit also reviews the sequence and interaction of these processes including the process inputs, outputs, controls and resources.
Process Capability Study A study undertaken to statistically define the distribution of output from a process under normal operating conditions.
Process Improvement Action required to improve the performance of a process to meet business objectives.
Procurement Signatory A person authorised to sign a Purchase Order or Purchase Order amendment. (Rolls-Royce Marine - Submarines)
Product A product is the result of activities or processes. It may include service, hardware, processed materials, software or a combination thereof.
Product Audit A product audit is an activity that reviews the journey of the product through related core processes to verify that the product conforms to requirements by "Walking the Process".
Product Definition Physical or electronic drawings, electronic models or other associated information that defines the final product.
Product Verification The confirmation through the provision of objective evidence that specified product requirements have been fulfilled.
Production Includes assemblies, components, details and raw materials designed / manufactured / processed by a supplier, or procured from external sources and used in series production.
Production Consumables Material that forms part of, or is used directly in the manufacture and / or assembly of products delivered to Rolls-Royce.
Production Parts Assemblies, components, details and raw material, designed / manufactured or processed by a supplier for use in series production or spares support.
Production Permit (also known as Waiver) The authorisation to depart from the original specified technical requirements prior to production. This authorisation operates for a limited quantity or time period and on no account shall it be allowed to extend to another contract without a further application.
Product Quality Escape Any product released from a supplier to Rolls-Royce that is subsequently determined by that supplier (or Rolls-Royce) to contain a non-conformity.
Project A unique process consisting of a set of co-ordinated and controlled activities with start and finish dates; undertaken to achieve an objective conforming to specific requirements - including the constraints of time, cost and resources.
Proprietary Part The product of companies other than Rolls-Royce group which are not covered by any Rolls-Royce specification or controlling document, are not National or International standard parts, and are only available from that source.
