| Term | Definition |
Salvage |
The recovery of non-conforming new product (that cannot be reworked) to an acceptance standard, using techniques, which are outside standard manufacturing methods for said product. |
Sample |
A sample shall consist of a specified number of items (e.g. components) selected at random to ensure an accurate representation of the batch or process. |
Scorecards |
Summaries produced by Rolls-Royce Supplier Development / Quality personnel showing supplier performance for non-conformance, responsiveness and delivery. |
Scrap
Material / Product |
Product declared unfit for purpose that is technically not possible, or economically inappropriate to restore to specification requirements. |
Secondary Packaging |
Also known as over-pack or transit packaging and is applied to the primary packaged part. The purpose of secondary packaging is to protect the primary packaged part(s) during shipment / delivery by road, sea or air from the supplier to Rolls–Royce (typical risks can include mechanical handling, stacking, crushing, strapping, impact, exposure to precipitation etc.). |
Segregation |
Physical separation of non-conforming product from conforming product, in terms of an "appropriate" distance / proximity between conforming and non-conforming product. |
Sensitive
Part |
Those parts that are not critical but whose failure could seriously effect engine performance, reliability or cost of operation; such parts, or features on them, are sensitive to change of source / method of manufacture. |
Serial
number |
A number or letter / number combination prefixed S / N (or R / N for older non-critical parts) which shall be totally unique. |
Service
Bulletin |
A formal document raised to advise customers on the consequence of a modification and their required action. The Service Bulletin is approved by the Airframer's Regulatory Authority; this document may not be required for all Rolls-Royce products and businesses. |
Service
Management Plan |
The plan which defines all the activities in life management for parts which are controlled to a critical standard but are not critical by Engine / product failure modes and effects analysis. |
Shelf
Life |
Product(s) in stock which have a defined timescale after which it becomes unusable (e.g. an expiry date) is said to have a shelf life. |
Significant
Risk |
Risk is considered significant if the sourcing or re-sourcing of commodity is to a new or existing facility without previous equivalent experience for the commodity affected, or the facility is being closed or relocated. |
Simultaneous
Engineering |
See Concurrent (Engineering) Component Definition for details. |
Source |
Any organisation providing products or services (including material) engaged in any or all of the manufacturing sequence of a part - including any assembly fitting processes and build inspection techniques. |
Source
(demonstrated) and Method Controlled Repair |
"Source and Method Controlled Part Repair" means the repair of an aero engine part which involves source capability demonstration of the process; plus audit, validation and approval by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and may involve proprietary processes, or specific techniques specially developed or adapted by Rolls-Royce. |
Source
Controlled parts |
Proprietary parts to which specific Rolls-Royce controls have been applied or which have been modified to meet a specific Rolls-Royce requirement. They also include those parts designed externally to meet a specific Rolls-Royce requirement that can be adequately specified via a Source Control Drawing (SCD). |
Source
Inspection |
Inspection that is performed by a Rolls-Royce representative at the supplier, or at the manufacturer of the part being supplied. |
Source
Substantiation |
Also referred to as "engineering source approval"- Engineering approval of product and / or part specific process after satisfactory substantiation testing. |
Sub-contractor |
Under Aerospace rules a supply source, which does not hold a Production Organisation Approval (POA) by a National Aviation Authority is considered as a sub-contractor under the direct control of the POA holder's quality system. The production organisation approval holder retains the final responsibility for the work carried out within the sub-contractor's facilities. Sub-contractors can provide Certificates of Conformity only. |
Special
Process |
Those processes which modify or change the inherent physical, chemical, electrical or metallurgical properties of a component, or non-conventional methods which remove or deposit material on a component during or after fabrication which cannot be fully evaluated by non destructive means, or those used to maintain process control such as non destructive testing. (Rolls-Royce special processes are listed in RPS 900 / 1). |
Special
Processes within Nadcap Scope |
Those special processes supported by the Nadcap special process task group supported by Rolls-Royce. |
Stable
Process |
A process can be said to be operating in a state of statistical
stability, or be "in control", if the following conditions
are not observed in the plot point patterns on any of the control charts
for the process. • One or more points falls outside the upper or lower control limits on the chart • Eight or more consecutive points fall on either side of the mean average of the measured values |
Standard
part |
A part whose design definition is held in the public domain {i.e. Society of British Aerospace (SBAC), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), National Aerospace Standards Committee (NAS) part numbers}. |
Standardisation
|
The mechanical property evaluation and metallurgical examination normally carried out on Critical / Sensitive forgings or flash welded rings to demonstrate that the component complies with the Rolls-Royce requirements in terms of material integrity and mechanical properties. The requirements are normally defined in the component approval package issued by Rolls-Royce. |
Stockist |
A supplier carrying out purchase, storage and sale of products without affecting their conformance. |
Stranger & Alien Part(s) |
Products (e.g. Gas Turbines) will be classified as "End of Production" (S & A) as they approach and / or reach the end of new production build activities - such engines and part(s) combinations would then normally be considered as "Stranger & Alien" (i.e. as opposed to Runner & Repeater) except where they are still:
|
STP
Tooling |
Special to Product Tooling - that is tooling which is unique to the particular product concerned. |
Sub-system
Accountability (SSA) |
The organisation that is accountable for the design, verification and supply of a part is assigned sub-system accountability. SSA replaces the concepts of separate design responsibility, technical responsibility and manufacturing responsibility. |
Sub-tier
Supplier |
Suppliers not working under a direct purchase order from Rolls-Royce but performing work on Rolls-Royce products at a lower level in the supply chain (via purchase order cascade). |
1st
Tier Supplier |
A supplier working under a direct purchase order from Rolls-Royce. A 1st tier supplier may control further sub-tier suppliers in accordance with SABRe requirements. |
Supplier |
Is the generic term used throughout SABRe to describe a supply source of any product or service, regardless of whether it is a 1st tier (i.e. operating in direct receipt of a Rolls-Royce Purchase Order), or a sub-tier supplier. |
Supplier
Approved FAIR |
Approval awarded by Rolls-Royce permitting Rolls-Royce authorised supplier personnel to perform the over check of their own FAI and sign the over check on behalf of Rolls-Royce. |
Supply
Chain Relationships in Aerospace (SCRIA) |
A code of practice produced by the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) for suppliers of aerospace parts. |
Supplier
Development Leader (SDL) |
A Rolls-Royce individual having the responsibility of facilitating improvement in supply chain delivery and quality performance. |
Supplier
Development Improvement Leader (SDIL) |
A Rolls-Royce individual responsible for co-ordinating central resource to ensure that supplier development is focussed in line with the requirements of the (Rolls-Royce) business. |
